APRA Connecting Members UK Presentation.
December 15, 2011
10 Sites, Services & People to kick-start your 2012.
It was tremendous to meet so many artists at the APRA Connecting Members UK meeting in London on December 14th. Thanks to those brave souls who came out in less than plesant weather – even for the UK – to hear myself and the other speakers.
I almost managed to keep to my alloted time. I’m sure APRA’s UK rep Cathi Ogden forgave me for running over time as I was so keen to ensure the presentation was packed with as much useful info as possible. If you happen to be an Australian music artist working in the UK or Europe and you’ve not connected with Cathi you should sort that out. Cathi is such a great champion for Australian music in this part of the world. She can give no end of assistance with making sure you’re live performance reports get posted – so that you get paid – and she has a wealth of contacts.
So, here is the presentation I gave last night. I’ve posted it here as it was a bit of a challange making notes in such a short space of time.
If you attended the event be sure to head over to my Facebook page and say hi by hitting the Like button and I look forward to hearing from you all along the line.

10 Sites, Services & People to kick-start your 2012.
I’m heading tonight to the APRA Connecting Members presentation with what I hope will be one of the most useful presentations I have ever given. I’ve challenged myself to present 10 things that APRA artists can use in 2012 to give their careers a boost – in only 10 minutes.
Of course presenting all these Websites, Music Services and People in only 10 minutes will only give me a chance to glance across the value that these services offer and will give any of you attending a challenge in the note taking stakes.
But fear not my friends. I’ll be posting my slides here for you from late tonight so that you can review my suggestions.
If you are attending the event be sure to come say hello and head over to my Facebook page and say hi by hitting the Like button.
See you tonight!

For around ten years now entrepeneur Brendan Harkin has been traveling the globe with a passion for bringing an eclectic mix of digital gurus together for his X Media Lab events. This Friday, Harkin evolves the X Media brand with the first Sounds Digital event to be staged at Saddlers Wells in London.
Sounds Digital will face off a number of internationally recognised digital thought leaders such as Ogilvy’s Nicole Yershon, (@nicoleyershon) recently cited as one of the UK’s top 100 digital citizens in a WiredUK poll, against the challenge of how to save the music industry from itself. On day one of the event participants will hear from the experts on their vision of the digital future, with presenters almost pitching themselves as mentors to project teams assembled from as far as Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Seoul and Melbourne. On days two and three the project teams bunker down in lab sessions with mentors for some tough love and guidance on how to take their projects to the next level.

EGM sign Australian act [26] for all territories management.
November 22, 2009
London UK – November 22 2011 – Evil Genius Media (EGM) are proud to announce the signing of acclaimed Australian production rock act [26] for management in all territories effective immediately.
EGM has immediately commenced work scheduling a first UK single and album release for the band drawn from [26]’s acclaimed Australian released album Birth’s Deaths and Marriages. In addition EGM is setting plans in place to tour the Australian act in the UK and Europe in early to mid 2011.
[26] were the focus of considerable industry attention when they performed at MuseExpo Europe in London & MuseExpo L.A. as well as Hong Kong’s Music Matters earlier this year. They immediately attracted enthusiastic support from Mainstage Artists agent Alex Lloyd who will represent the band for bookings and plugger Adrian Tredinnick of Copmedia who will take releases to radio.
[26] are Nick O’Donnell (Vocals & Sonic Rhythm Guitar) Drew Fellows ( Keyboards & Vocals), Ross Duckworth (Bass & Vocals) and Iain Wilson (Drums & Vocals)
“I saw [26] at Sat Bisla’s MuseExpo Europe this year and what they are doing with their sound immediately made sense to me for the UK and European market.” Says EGM owner Mark Muggeridge. An announcement on the first single and tour dates will follow shortly.
[26]’s album Birth’s Deaths and Marriages was released to considerable acclaim in Australia from local media. Writing in The Brisbane Courier Mail respected journalist Noel Mengel compared [26] to Coldplay and Elbow and said that they “deserved the attention on the world stage.” In part the enthusiasm is due to the bands sweeping production sound that stretches from a raw and honest four piece indie rock band through to more atmospheric material that uses backing from church organs, orchestral harps and a in one case a 100 piece choir.
A free download of Dear Mr Devil is available from the bands website.
One Thousand True Fans
November 9, 2009
Kevin Kelly might have the number wrong, but the theory is right.
For some time now, I’ve been talking to artists I manage and consult with about the theory of One Thousand True Fans. If you’re not familiar with the theory put forward by blogger Kevin Kelly then, there are links at the bottom of the article. I’ll try to give you my spin on it as concisely as I can.
One Thousand True Fans
There are fans out there for your music that will come to the occasional gig, perhaps buy a CD, and maybe join your Facebook group. They are fans, just not, true fans.
Then there is the fan, that tries to attend every single gig, buys every CD as soon as it’s released, or even sooner if you offer then for pre sale, they bring friends to gigs and they respond to every e-mail you send them. They are a true fan.
So the theory goes that if you, as an artist, have one thousand true fans, you’ll be able to make a living. Perhaps not enough to buy a rock star lifestyle, but enough to give up the day job. In part because the one thousand true fans buy everything you offer, but also because if you’re doing the work required to service the one thousand true fans, you’ll also attract enough of the occasional fans to make a living.
It’s about interaction and being social.
Recent surveys of the US music market reveal that there are around ten times as many CD’s released into the market as there were around 10 years ago. I would not be surprised to find the numbers are around the same in the UK and Australia although I have no data to support this.
However artists have discovered they have to do more than just release a CD and tour to make meaningful contact with fans. Fans want and are getting greater access and interaction with artists fulled by sometimes big budget social media campaigns. Setting the contentious issue of file sharing aside for a moment, finding and developing a genuine relationship with the true fans is a necessity in surviving for artists today.
I mention all this today because there was a great article in The Sunday Times. It talks about five thousand fans rather than one thousand suggesting that perhaps Kelly number was wrong but the theory is right.
I’ve linked the article below as well as Kelly’s original post . I’ve also linked to a page where Seth Godin references Kelly as his riffs on the subject are always worth reading.

London aware of Aussie acts.
November 6, 2009
Queensland’s The Middle East Flagged by XL A & R as one to watch.
Australia’s live music scene is enviable. Strong numbers across the live sector also mean new acts regularly rising to the surface to keep things fresh. One act that has recently come to our attention via an interview with XL Records Director or A & R Hannah Overton, is Townsville’s The Middle East.
Overton sighted the Aussie folk act as an example of how acts outside of the US and the UK can develop fully before coming to the attention of a major label. Acts here often being thrust into the spot light too early simply due to the fact that there is intense media scrutiny of new bands and that acts making their way not only have to build a fan base but also walk the plank of bloggers, tweeters etc.
Her comments and the full article will be published in Australia’s The Music Network on November 16 2009.
